Went to my orthodontist's office today for the final time til surgery is complete! There they installed "hooks" into my braces wire... 3 on top & 3 on bottom... and that's when I learned I won't really be "wired" shut at all but actually RUBBERBANDED shut! :) That was an incredible relief, just knowing I'm not truly STUCK in a closed position. I know that probably sounds weird but it's just comforting to know that even though I carry around wire cutters that I'll be able to open my teeth apart even just a TINY bit to let in air, maybe medicines, who knows.
Oh & speaking of medicines, I was a little concerned because I take a bipolar med called Lamictal every day that can't just be stopped abruptly. So luckily I found out that we can crush up that pill & put it into a milkshake so knowing that was a relief because the only other option was to have it compounded into a liquid but that isn't covered by insurance so it would've been crazy expensive.
So yeah, got the hooks on today (with pink rubberbands too, just for fun. Normally I wear pearl rubberbands on my clear braces so they look nearly invisible but she said with the blood & stuff those definitely WILL stain to an ugly brown so I figured why not get something fun for once?) :)
Have my pre-op appt with my jaw surgeon (Dr. Daniel Levin in Huntington Beach) tomorrow at 10:30am so I better get some sleep! More soon! :)
35 year old woman having double jaw surgery, in segments. The 1st part of is known as a SARPE (surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion), necessary to widen my narrow upper palate & the second, a lower jaw reconstruction where they will cut the bone and piece it back together eliminating my severe underbite & crossbite. I hope to help others nervous about undergoing either process, and provide information that I was grateful to be given from bloggers who posted before me.
